Tidal Wave - Thoughts on the Artistic Process
Why? Venice had 1.9 million visitors in 1971 which was the first year I visited the city. In 2023 that number swelled to almost 6 million people. There are now more holiday rentals than local residences. I felt this acutely on my last visit in May of 2024. My entry to the Sheridan Prize for Art. This is the finished illustration that I submitted. The composition employs black and white and color digital photography. An iPad was used as a light table to highlight the piece. My hands are also incorporated into the artwork. Adobe Photoshop was my primary software, and Mac OS 15.1 was my operating system. The color photo was captured through glass while I was waiting for the vaporetto on the dock. The silhouette of the walking people on the bridge was heavily backlit, which made it stand out.
